Roman remains in the vineyards

A journey in three stages

Nîmes Arenas, Maison Carrée, Tour Magne, Pont du Gard… The Costières de Nîmes vineyard is close to some of the greatest monuments left by the Romans. Some estates also contain have remains. We made a list for you, classified according to an itinerary which would take you from Nîmes to Beaucaire.

Domaine de la Patience

Leaving Nîmes, your first stop will be at this organic estate located in the town of Bezouce. At the end of a two-kilometre-long footpath, you will discover a link in the Roman aqueduct which carried water from the Pont du Gard to the town of Nîmes, further to the west.

Domaine de Poulvarel

Continuing northeast to the village of Sernhac, you will then stop in this estate near the Gardon river, whose land is crossed by two tunnels dug into the rock and each several tens of meters long. 2,000 years ago, they allowed water coming from the neighboring Pont du Gard to overcome the obstacle formed by the hills surrounding the green Escaunes valley.

Mas des Tourelles

Finally, head south to reach this area near Beaucaire, under the vines of which a Gallo-Roman villa as well as an amphora manufacturing workshop were discovered. The owners, who have recreated a life-size Roman cellar and vineyard, will offer you the opportunity to taste wines vinified and flavored according to custom in ancient Rome.
